Pokegun
3D printed guns are both a 1st and 2nd amendment issue. While banning printing guns could increase public safety, banning the digital files to print guns would be a violation of freedom of speech. Where does freedom of speech end and public safety begin, and who gets to decide what speech is limited? Pokegun addresses the implications 3D printers will have on access to firearms. The title of the series references the Pokemon iconography. When translated into English Pokemon means “pocket monster” an apt metaphor for a handgun; the catch phrase “gotta catch ‘em all” reflects the mentality of many gun collectors. The Pokegun sculptures use imagery from toys to criticize the treatment of guns as toys. Whatever your stance on gun control, they should be treated like extremely dangerous tools.
